We sat down with Phil Johnson, an enthusiastic participant of Professor Dr. Claus Mattheck’s VTA (Visual Tree Assessment) seminars in Wiesloch, to talk about his experiences and insights. With more than 14 years of experience in the arboricultural world, including work as a climbing arborist and earning his Level 6 Cert in Arb, Phil combines practical expertise in tree work with a broad understanding of tree management. Adventurous, open-minded, and solution-oriented, he constantly seeks new learning opportunities and specializes in pushing the boundaries of internal inspection technology. From his trip to Germany to receiving a new nickname from Claus Mattheck himself, Phil took the time to share his impressions and reflections on his time in Germany!

What was the decisive argument for you to come to Wiesloch for the seminar?
Phil Johnson: Well, I’ve never been to Germany, and I’ve never attended a seminar by Claus Mattheck either. So I thought, why not combine both? It seemed like a great opportunity.
Have you ever heard of Wiesloch before?
Phil Johnson: Honestly, no. I had no idea where Wiesloch was before signing up. But now I can say it’s a place that will stick with me!
Have you already attended any seminars by Prof. Dr. Claus Mattheck?
Phil Johnson: Not before this one. I had read a lot about him, but never actually seen him in action. I mean, the man is a legend in the arboriculture world!
Was the trip worth it? Was the investment in attending the seminar worth it for you?
Phil Johnson: Oh, absolutely! The journey alone was worth it for the experience. It was great to get out of the routine and immerse myself in something new. And the seminar itself? Even better.
On a scale from “Wow!” to “Hmm, well”, how did the seminar meet your expectations?
Phil Johnson: Definitely a “Wow!” from start to finish. It was engaging, informative, and honestly, pretty inspiring.
What was the absolute highlight for you during the seminar?
Phil Johnson: I will never forget when Professor Mattheck gave me the nickname ‘Professor Shearbomb.’ To be honest, I never expected him to honor me with such a name! It was a moment that truly made me laugh and at the same time, a memory I will always carry with me – I even made the nickname my company name.
What have you already implemented from the seminar into your daily work?
Phil Johnson: A clearer understanding of failure criteria, especially when it comes to assessing tree risks. I’ve learned not to take unnecessary risks with defective trees in high-target areas. It’s about being smart, not just brave.
How valuable was the exchange with your international colleagues?
Phil Johnson: It was really interesting to hear how arboriculture is practiced in other countries, like Belgium, France and Australia. We all face similar challenges, but the approaches can vary. It was eye-opening.
Would you recommend the seminar to your colleagues? And if so, how would you describe it in one sentence?
Phil Johnson: Absolutely. I’ve already recommended it! In one sentence, I’d say: An unforgettable experience with one of the most famous and well-known arboricultural masterminds of the last few decades. Trust me, they won’t regret it.
Do you think the seminar would have been comparable as an online seminar, or should one definitely experience Prof. Dr. Claus Mattheck live?
Phil Johnson: Oh, it has to be live. Sure, an online version would be good, but the whole experience of being in Germany, driving over, staying at IML, and being there in person with Claus – that’s what made it special. You can’t really replicate that online.
What ultimate insider tip do you have for future participants to make the seminar experience a real highlight?
Phil Johnson: Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Really make sure you understand what Claus is explaining – chances are, others will have the same question, and you’ll get a great answer. It’s an interactive experience, so take full advantage of it!
Will we see you again soon?
Phil Johnson: I certainly hope so! I’m already looking forward to the next time.
